The first mall in the top 10 countries

History of Southdale Center

The Southdale Center was the country's first fully enclosed shopping mall. The first plan for this project was unveiled in 1952. It first opened its doors to customers on October 8, 1956, with over 40,000 people in attendance. The Dayton family commissioned Victor Gruen's architecture firm to build and expand the massive chain of stores they owned into a shopping centre in Edina, Minnesota. The architecture was carefully crafted to create a temperature-controlled enclosure.
